Movie Date--A screening of the film “Everest” on Sept. 29 will benefit the Laguna Canyon Foundation. Filmmaker Greg MacGillivray will show his work-in-progress, a 40-minute motion picture of an expedition to the summit of Mt. Everest. The film is scheduled for release next March. The screening takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Imax Theatre at Irvine Spectrum. Tickets are $200, $100 or $50 per person. Contact the Laguna Canyon Foundation, P.O. Watercraft--See tropical underwater sea life from around the world at a program presented by photographer Tom Haight on Tuesday at the meeting of the Sierra Sage chapter of the Sierra Club. Haight, an instructor of underwater photography and a diver for more than 30 years, will show slides and display photographs. His work has appeared in such publications as National Geographic, Adventure West and Australian National History. Heated Discussion--Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and a toasted marshmallow while learning about the ancient history of Upper Newport Bay at a campfire Saturday on Shellmaker Island. Steve Conkling, a local paleontologist, will describe the changes that have taken place in Southern California land forms over time.
