No sooner did firefighters make quick work of a brush fire in Griffith Park on Saturday afternoon than a second apparently unrelated blaze broke out in the same area.

About 80 firefighters battled the second blaze, which broke out about 3:30 p.m., close to the park’s pony rides area near Crystal Springs Drive, said Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Humphrey said the blaze was extinguished in 55 minutes. “L.A. city firefighters, with assistance from their friends at L.A. County, [made] a very aggressive attack on the blaze,” he said.

“Interestingly, we brought the fixed-wing Super Scooper aircraft to bear on this, as well as five helicopters. And we think that the air attack itself really made a difference on this fire. There have been no injuries and no evacuations.”

Earlier, a fire scorched about an acre in the same area, Humphrey said. It took about 30 firefighters only 10 minutes to put out the first blaze, which was reported to authorities about 2 p.m., Humphrey said.

There was no known connection between the two fires, he said.
