Woman Held After Fatal Freeway Crash
A woman blamed for a chain-reaction crash on the San Diego Freeway is being held in jail in Van Nuys on suspicion of felony drunk driving and second-degree murder, police said Saturday.
California Highway Patrol officers arrested Cynthia Norris, 37, of Woodland Hills after her car slammed into the center divider Friday morning and overturned, causing a four-car pileup. A passenger in one of those vehicles, a 75-year-old man, was killed in the collision, said CHP spokesman Bruce Ferrier.
Authorities did not release the victim’s name, pending notification of next of kin.
The accident happened at 5:35 a.m. in the southbound lanes north of Santa Monica Boulevard. Three other people in the van in which the man was killed were taken to UCLA Medical Center for “injuries ranging from minor to major,” Ferrier said.
Norris was on her way to work as an airline ticket agent when the crash happened, police said. She is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.
The accident blocked three lanes of the busy freeway for almost four hours during morning rush-hour traffic.
