Cal Lutheran Rolls to Victory over Illinois Benedictine, 6-1

Oskar Kantoff scored three times during a four-goal outburst in the first half and Cal Lutheran went on to a 6-1 victory over Illinois Benedictine in a nonconference men’s soccer match Saturday at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

The Kingsmen (2-2) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take a 4-1 halftime lead. Kantoff’s goals and another by Brian Collins came within a 12-minute span.

Ryan Girod and Matt Romeo scored second-half goals for Cal Lutheran, which plays Colorado College in a nonconference match today.

In another men’s soccer match:

The Master’s 6, Biola 4--Bryan Lee scored consecutive goals in the second half to break a 3-3 tie in a nonconference match at Biola.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 5, Whittier 1--Liz Christensen scored three goals to give her four on the season in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Westmont Invitational--Geir Christensen finished eighth in 28:10 and Cory Stigile was 10th in 28:22 to lead Cal Lutheran to fifth place with 127 points in the nine-team meet on the eight-kilometer course at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

Kurt Angelbeck finished 18th in 29:13 for The Master’s, which finished seventh with 188 points.

Loyola Marymount 26, Pepperdine 29--Rick Weiss was first in 32:09 to help the host Lions take revenge on the Waves for last week’s University of San Diego Invitational.

Chris Shaw of Pepperdine was second in 32:41, followed by teammate Bryan Kuvshinikov in 32:53. The Waves finished fifth in the USD race, while Loyola was seventh.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Westmont Invitational--Kellie Stigile was sixth in 21:04 to lead Cal Lutheran to a fourth-place finish with 90 points in the nine-team meet on the five-kilometer course at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

Cristen Hamley led The Master’s to fifth place with 111 points by finishing 18th in 22:30.

The Santa Barbara Athletic Association won the championship with 19 points.

Loyola Marymount 20, Pepperdine 38--Rebecca Freebury of Pepperdine won the race in 19:26, but the Lions took the next five places to win the team competition, making up for a narrow loss to the Waves in last week’s University of San Diego Invitational.

Lindsey Webb led the Loyola contingent in 19:30, followed by Malinali Martinez in 20:00. Holly Turney, Kristin Mahaney and Kathy Zimmerman all finished in 20:16 for the Lions, with Sarah Gorman finishing seventh for Pepperdine in 20:18.

Pepperdine finished sixth to Loyola’s seventh last week in San Diego.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 8, Stanford 3--The Waves also beat Claremont, 9-6, to advance to today’s Southern California tournament semifinal at USC. Pepperdine’s Jeremy Pope scored four goals in the victory over Stanford, while Alex Rodriguez added three against Claremont. The Waves meet California in one semifinal, while USC faces UC Irvine in the other.
