FLORIDA (3-0) BEAT TENNESSEE, 33-20

The Volunteers weren’t the only ones happy to see Peyton Manning come back for his senior season. The Gators backed up their early-week trash talk by beating him for the third consecutive year. Next: At Kentucky.

TENNESSEE (2-1) LOST TO FLORIDA, 33-20

Peyton Manning has passed for more than 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns and still has lost three times to Florida. If Gators are tough, wait until he becomes a human tackling dummy with the Saints. Next: Mississippi, Oct. 4.

FLORIDA ST. (2-0) BEAT NO. 16 CLEMSON, 35-28

Peter Warrick needs a fancy nickname like Neon Deion after his 90-yard punt return for a touchdown and two long scores after pass receptions. How about “Been There, Dunn That” for a guy named Warrick? Next: Miami, Oct. 4.

NORTH CAROLINA (3-0) BEAT MARYLAND, 40-14

The Tar Heels probably could have went to their water boy as quarterback and beaten the Terrapins. As it was, Oscar Davenport--formerly No. 2 to Chris Keldorf--passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns in his first start. Next: Virginia.

NEBRASKA (3-0) BEAT WASHINGTON, 27-14

The weather was warm in Seattle, but the Huskies suffered a case of Frost-bite. Quarterback Scott Frost had touchdown runs of 30 and 34 yards to jump-start the Cornhuskers. Next: Kansas State, Oct. 4.

MICHIGAN (2-0) BEAT BAYLOR, 38-3

Elgin Baylor probably could have done better against the Wolverine defense than the Bears’ second-leading all-time rusher Jerod Douglas, who had 12 yards in 12 carries. Michigan’s Chris Howard had two touchdowns. Next: Notre Dame.

OHIO STATE (3-0) BEAT ARIZONA, 28-20

The Buckeyes almost blow a 28-0 lead and whom does Coach John Cooper blame? The Ohio State fans. “It’s not really as loud as it should be,” said Cooper. “It was 21-0 and 28-0 and you’d think was still a 0-0 tie.” Next: at Missouri.

LSU (2-1) LOST TO AUBURN, 31-28

The Tiger running game hasn’t missed a step with Cecil Collins replacing injured All-American Kevin Faulk. Collins had 232 yards and two touchdowns in 27 carries but said afterward, “Unfortunately, I didn’t do enough” Next: Akron.

ALABAMA (2-1) LOST TO ARKANSAS, 17-16

The Razorbacks have the Crimson Tide’s number in Tuscaloosa, with one-point victories in the last two games there. In fact, Arkansas players felt right at home in chanting “This is our field.” Next: Southern Mississippi.

AUBURN (3-0) BEAT LSU, 31-28

The Tigers did most of their damage with the passing of Dameyune Craig (23-of-45 for 342 yards, two touchdowns), but it Rusty Williams’ one-yard touchdown dive with 30 seconds left that was decisive. Next: Central Florida.

IOWA (3-0) BEAT IOWA STATE, 63-20

The good news for the Cyclones is that they held Hawkeye running back Tavian Banks 131 yards below his season average. The bad news is that Banks still ran for 127 yards and four touchdowns. Next: Illinois.

ARIZONA STATE (2-1) LOST TO BYU, 13-10

The defending Pacific 10 champion Sun Devils were angered over not being ranked to start the season but a loss to a BYU team that was manhandled by Washington might knock them back out of the Top 25. Next: at Oregon State.

COLORADO (1-1) DID NOT PLAY

Quarterback John Hessler’s ears are probably still burning from the tongue-lashing he got from Coach Rick Neuheisel in last week’s loss to Michigan. Hessler will really be feeling the heat with another subpar effort Next: Wyoming.

CLEMSON (2-1) LOST TO FLORIDA STATE, 35-28

The Seminoles had two weeks to get over the shock of seeing the Tigers on film actually show a passing game. With the element of surprise gone, Clemson quarterback Nealon Greene reverted to his scatter-arm ways. Next: At Georgia Tech

MICHIGAN STATE (3-0) BEAT NOTRE DAME, 23-7

Irish Coach Bob Davie shouldn’t take this loss to the Spartans too hard. His predecessor, Lou Holtz, also lost to Michigan State in his first season, 1986--the last time the Spartans defeated the Irish. Next: Minnesota, Oct. 4

VIRGINIA TECH (3-0) BEAT TEMPLE, 23-13

This one wasn’t easy for the Hokies, as Temple twice fumbled away scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter. The Hokies hitched their offense to Ken Oxendine, who ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Next: Arkansas State.

WASHINGTON STATE (3-0) BEAT ILLINOIS, 35-22

The Cougars were talking as if they had lost this one. Quarterback Ryan Leaf called his performance “terrible,” and Coach Mike Price was furious at his team for committing 18 penalties. Next: Boise State.

KANSAS STATE (2-0) DID NOT PLAY

Where would the Wildcats be without the Mid-American Conference? Not this high in the rankings. Bowling Green will be their third MAC opponent. It gets tough Oct. 4, when Wildcats visit Lincoln, Neb. Next: Bowling Green.

STANFORD BEAT OREGON STATE, 27-24

This one wasn’t pretty, but as Coach Tyrone Willingham said, “We won, and you have to value that.” Stanford needed a late 78-yard, 15-play drive, scoring with 27 seconds left to defeat the Beavers. Next: Oregon.

MIAMI (1-2) LOST TO PITTSBURGH, 21-17

After Hurricanes lost to the Panthers Thursday for the first time since 1976, Coach Butch Davis had this to say about the remaining schedule: “I think we can run the table.” Butch, you’re no Minnesota Fats. Next: West Virginia.

COLORADO ST. (2-2) LOST TO AIR FORCE, 24-0

Falcon quarterback Blane Morgan did what his brother Beau couldn’t do in his four years at Air Force--beat the Rams. Colorado State scored 28 points in the final 20 minutes last year to stun Air Force last year, 42-41. Next: Hawaii, Oct. 4.

UCLA (1-2) DID NOT PLAY

What a difference a week makes. Last Saturday’s 66-3 stampede over Texas eased the pain of close losses to Washington State and Tennessee and put the Bruins in Top 25 for the first time since Nov. 4, 1995. Next: Arizona.

GEORGIA (3-0) BEAT NORTHEAST LOUISIANA, 42-3

Georgia is 3-0 for the first time since 1988, the last of Vince Dooley’s 25 years as coach before taking a desk job as athletic director. Dooley can’t make a schedule that excludes Florida, Tennessee and Auburn. Next: Mississippi St., Oct. 4.
