$1.8-Million Improvement Project Planned at Interchange

A Caltrans improvement project near the interchange of the San Gabriel River and San Diego freeways will grow vines on sound walls to reduce graffiti, replace dead and dying plants and install a computer-controlled irrigation system.

Designs for the $1.8-million project should be ready in December, with work starting in August. It should be completed in 2000.

Caltrans officials said the project will reduce maintenance costs at the interchange, which straddles the Orange-Los Angeles county line.

Officials from the California Department of Transportation will discuss the efforts with residents at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Farmers & Merchants Bank, 12535 Seal Beach Blvd., in the Rossmoor Shopping Center.

The informal meeting will allow residents to ask questions and look at plant samples, photos and project displays.
