Snowmobiler Dies After Being Hit by Avalanche
A snowmobiler was killed over the weekend in an avalanche he triggered by roaring up a mountainside in Alaska’s Denali National Park and Preserve, park officials said.
Rescue crews found the body of Mark Slimmen on Sunday under nearly 7 feet of avalanche debris west of Denali’s Broad Pass.
Slimmen, 34, of Fairbanks, had been caught in the slide Saturday afternoon, park officials said.
Slimmen’s companions saw the avalanche strike him and throw him off his snowmobile, park spokeswoman Jane Tranel said. They spent about 30 minutes trying to find him, then drove to the highway to call the Alaska State Police for help, she said.
