Murder Try Is Charge for Man Shot by Police
A man who was shot by police Sunday after allegedly pointing a handgun at them is being charged with attempted murder, Cypress police said.
Jose Manuel Hernandez, 32, of El Monte went to Forest Lawn Memorial Parks & Mortuaries looking for his ex-girlfriend, police said. The woman, a Forest Lawn employee, told police that Hernandez had been making death threats. Police were called after Hernandez was seen at the cemetery.
Officers confronted the man, who dropped to the ground, took a handgun from a duffel bag and pointed it at them, officials said.
Hernandez was shot twice, once in the leg and once in the torso, Sgt. David Birozy said.
He was in critical but stable condition Monday at Long Beach Memorial Hospital.
In addition to attempted murder, Hernandez is being charged with possession of a concealed and loaded firearm, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and making terrorist threats, Birozy said. His bail has been set at $50,000.
