OCC Campus Crime Up 4.8% in 1997-98
Crime at Orange Coast College rose by 4.8% during the 1997-98 school year, marking the first increase in several years.
A total of 175 crimes were reported from July 1, 1997, to June 30, 1998, according to a campus report. By comparison, 167 crimes were reported in the 1996-97 year--the lowest level in a decade.
Most of the crimes reported this past year were relatively minor, including 73 petty thefts, 29 acts of vandalism, 24 burglaries, 18 minor or verbal assaults, 13 grand thefts and 12 vehicle thefts. The campus had no murders, rapes, sexual assaults, robberies or hate crimes during the period, records show. There was one case each of indecent exposure, aggravated assault and arson.
Crime on campus had been declining steadily since 1993-94, when there were 229 reported incidents.
