Cameras to Be Put on Buses to Monitor Vandalism

The City Council has voted to install security cameras on 10 city buses to prevent vandalism.

Last year, the city spent $97,000 to replace seats and windows that had been etched or marked with gang tags or people’s initials, said Cynthia Gibson, a spokeswoman for the Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines.

Signs already posted on the buses warning that vandalism could result in a maximum $500 fine have been ignored, she said.

“Just having the video cameras there act as a deterrent,” said Gibson. “The bus driver’s main concern is looking in front of them, not behind them.”

The cameras, which cost the city $98,000, should be installed by the end of September, along with plastic window guards, she said.
