Consultants Hired to Study Development of Closed Pier
A consultant specializing in piers and waterfront development will study possible commercial uses for the long-closed Malibu Pier, officials said.
The City Council voted Monday to hire Sacramento-based consultants Williams-Kuebelbeck & Associates to prepare a business plan for the decaying pier, said City Manager Harry Peacock.
The firm will report to the City Council in about 14 weeks on possible development that would bring in enough revenue to make the pier self-sustaining, Peacock said. The council has stipulated that no general fund money will be used to maintain the pier, which has been closed since January 1995 because of storm damage.
“We’re assuming that most people in town want the pier to reopen, but not to be significantly expanded to turn around and look like Redondo Beach or Santa Monica [piers],” Peacock said.
The state owns the 92-year-old pier, Peacock said, but has expressed interest in turning it over to Malibu if the city finds a way to fix and maintain the structure.
