Satellite Offices of Legal Center Planned
Oxnard attorney Carmen Ramirez has been hired to expand the Ventura County Superior Court’s Self-Help Legal Access Center.
Ramirez, a bilingual attorney who is president of the county bar association, will establish satellite offices in La Colonia and south Oxnard.
The Self-Help Legal Access Center on the first floor of the county courthouse in Ventura provides free information on the criminal justice system and alternatives to civil litigation.
Although intended to help enhance the provision of legal services and ensure access to the justice system, the center does not provide legal representation.
But Ramirez will be available to provide general legal assistance for people who do not have an attorney and must appear in court on issues ranging from name changes and small claims to adoption and jury service.
The centers will include books, videos, court forms and other information in English and Spanish.
Target date for opening the centers is Nov. 1.
