Community College Athletes of the Week
Jane Specht
Cypress, Freshman
Soccer
Specht, a freshman midfielder from Cypress High, made a major impact on the Charger program. She tied the college’s single-season goal record with 24 but, more importantly, helped the Chargers to their first state title. She scored in a 4-0 semifinal victory over Ohlone and had a goal and an assist on the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over El Camino in the title game.
Volleyball
Richelle Danet
* Saddleback, sophomore. Had 64 assists as the Gauchos won twice to earn a berth in the state tournament.
Tomas Serna
Santa Ana, Sophomore
Soccer
Serna, from Saddleback High, completed a dominating season as the Dons won the state title. Serna scored both goals in a 2-1 semifinal victory over De Anza, then came back with one more as the Dons beat Santa Barbara, 5-0, in the title game. Serna finished with 33 goals in 26 games, just shy of the college’s single-season record of 36 set by Jose Vasquez in 1990.
Basketball
Chris Mattice
* Santa Ana, sophomore. Had a game-high of 31 points and finished with 51 in three games at the Citrus tournament.
