Coyotes Revert to Winning Ways
Greg Adams’ fifth goal in his last six games led the Phoenix Coyotes to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night at Calgary.
Playing for the first time since having 14-game unbeaten and eight-game winning streaks snapped Wednesday night in Edmonton, Phoenix got off to an early lead against the tentative Flames, who trailed 2-0 before taking a shot.
Keith Tkachuk opened the scoring in the first four minutes on a power play when he deflected a slap shot from Jyrki Lumme past Flame goalie Tyler Moss.
Adams scored at 4:48 of the first period, and Brad Isbister scored later in the first period for Phoenix (15-3-2). The Coyotes outshot the Flames, 16-4, in the first period.
But the Flames didn’t quit.
Cory Stillman scored in the final minute of the second period and Jarome Iginla scored at 17:08 of the third, setting the stage for a frantic finish.
Although not busy early in the game, Coyote goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin mixed in some key stops among his 16 saves. He robbed Theoren Fleury with an alert pad save after the Flames’ forward was set up alone in the slot early in third.
The win improved Khabibulin’s lifetime record against the Flames to 10-1-1.
The Flames have lost six of their last eight games.
Adams was a free agent when he signed with Phoenix last summer to add scoring depth to the Coyote lineup, but the veteran left wing had only two assists through the first 14 games.
Adams, the oldest member of the Coyotes at 35, has five goals and an assist in his last six games.
