8 Killed in Blaze at Retirement Home

A fire gutted a retirement home outside Paris, killing eight people and injuring about two dozen others just a week after the building failed a safety inspection, officials said. About 140 firefighters fought the predawn blaze in the northeastern suburb of Livry-Gargan. Officials said the fire began in a ground-floor room and spread up the elevator shaft over three floors.
