Final Tests Set for Eye-Hemorrhage Drug
Advanced Corneal Systems Inc. is one step closer to marketing its experimental drug for clearing hemorrhages from the eye.
The Irvine developer of experimental therapies for visual disorders says it has initiated final-stage tests in the United States of its drug “Vitrase.” The company plans to enroll 800 patients in the study, which is designed to prove the drug’s safety and effectiveness for treating optical hemorrhages that often result from diabetes. If left untreated, the condition can cause permanent blindness.
After a similar study involving patients outside the U.S. produced favorable results, the company received approval to market the drug in Mexico.
