Santa Ana Is Coming to Town

Nail down those holiday lights and yard decorations.

Gusty Santa Ana winds are forecast to kick up overnight in Ventura County, bringing sustained winds of about 30 mph today with gusts reaching 50 mph around canyons and through mountain passes.

“It’s going to be pretty nasty,” said Jeff House, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., a private company that provides forecasts for The Times. “It’s going to be windy over the entire area. . . . That will present a challenge for people trying to drive through passes, below canyons and up into the mountains.”

Santa Ana winds are expected to affect all of Southern California, from Santa Barbara County to San Diego County.

As a result, temperatures will be warming up slightly as the down-slope winds push dry desert air into the region.

Highs today and Thursday should range from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, with nighttime temperatures in the low 30s to low 40s.

By Friday, the wind should begin to slacken, leaving behind sunny skies and warmer than usual temperatures through the weekend.

“If you get through the next two days, it will be nice,” House said.
