O’Connell to Set Up Sidewalk ‘Office’

As he has done regularly since being elected to office more than 15 years ago, state Sen. Jack O’Connell will conduct morning office hours from a card table set up on a downtown sidewalk.

O’Connell (D-San Luis Obispo) will greet people from 9:30 to 11 a.m. today at California and Main streets. No appointment is necessary and all topics are open for discussion.

In the past, voters have asked about pending legislation and the day’s top news and have voiced concerns about everything from education to freeway potholes. If a question requires research, the senator will mail the answers.

“Before the Legislature reconvenes on Jan. 4, I wanted to take this opportunity to meet face-to-face with my constituents,” O’Connell said.

The legislator has been setting up his outdoor office on city sidewalks since he won an Assembly seat in 1982. When he was elected to the Senate in 1994, he continued the tradition, said Kris Kuzmich, O’Connell’s aide.
