Jack H. Rankin, Covina Valley superintendent of schools, has announced that he will retire from his post at the end of the school year.

Rankin, 62, is only the third superintendent to oversee the Covina Valley Unified schools. He served 13 years.

During his tenure, the district has grown from 10,500 students to more than 14,000, although the district has reduced class sizes in kindergarten through third grade and expanded its technology program, officials said.

“I leave here knowing the superior staff in place will remain dedicated to enhancing programs which have been developed and implemented over the past 13 years,” Rankin said.

In July, state officials cited the district for 62 safety violations at two high schools and a maintenance facility. At the time, Rankin said a disgruntled former employee was responsible for an unusual number of inspections by the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The 41-year educator said he will pursue other educational opportunities and spend more time with his family.
