Andersen’s Steal Helps Estancia Defeat Heralds
Estancia’s Pete Andersen made a steal in the final seconds of the game to preserve a 59-58 victory over Whittier Christian in the Century Shootout boys’ basketball tournament Wednesday night.
Whittier Christian (2-2) outscored Estancia, 22-12, in the fourth quarter, but came up short in the pool-play game. Andersen finished with nine points.
John Cantrell, Travis Chandler and Brett Valbuena each scored 12 points to lead the Eagles (2-2), who took the lead for good in the second quarter.
In other tournament games:
Corona del Mar 64, Orange Lutheran 45--Kevin Hansen had 19 points, including three three-pointers to lead the Sea Kings (3-0). Jason Whieldon had 21 points for Orange Lutheran (4-2).
San Clemente 81, La Mirada 37--Ivan Cruz scored 12 points and Mitch Pierce had 11 points and eight assists for San Clemente (2-1).
Valencia 58, Century 50--Mike Zepeda’s 29 points led Century (1-3), which fell short against the Los Angeles County team.
In the Cerritos Valley Christian tournament:
Anaheim 65, Rosemead Bosco Tech 54--Anaheim trailed, 28-8, in the second quarter, but Jelani Parham’s 21 points and 11 rebounds and Eriz Assaraz’s 13 second-half points rallied the Colonists to victory.
In the Edison International tournament:
Cypress 53, No. 3 Tustin 50--Alphonso Stovall scored 13 points and Justin Yun had 12 as the Centurions upset Tustin in the first-round game. Chris Chatman scored 13 points to lead the Tillers.
Newport Harbor 63, Canyon 45--Dustin Illingsworth scored 25 points to lead Newport Harbor. Ryan Romberg had 12 points for Canyon.
Trabuco Hills 65, Servite 55--Brandon Martin scored 21 points for Trabuco Hills, which outscored Servite, 44-35, in the second half.
In the Darren Oliver Classic:
Fullerton 38, Torrance 37 (OT)--Josh Nettinga scored eight of Fullerton’s last 14 points as Fullerton outlasted Torrance in overtime. Jeffrey Kalama scored 16 for Torrance.
In the Jason Ferguson Memorial tournament:
Buena Park 49, Los Amigos 40--DeAndre Gipson scored 18 points, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots for Buena Park in the pool-play game.
Saddleback 46, Costa Mesa 35--Terrell Foster had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Saddleback (2-4).
In the Ocean View Tournament of Champions:
Mater Dei 68, Redondo Beach Redondo Union 51--Mike Bayer led Mater Dei (4-1) in the third-round victory with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Andrew Zahn had nine rebounds for Redondo Union.
In the La Quinta tournament:
Santa Ana Valley 69, Huntington Beach 52--Hardy Fatu scored 17 points and Eliu Fatu had 16 for Santa Ana Valley in the pool-play game.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
No. 10 Santa Margarita 63, Dana Hills 32--Spencer Gloger’s 25 points and eight rebounds led Santa Margarita (5-0) at home. Dana Hills is 2-4.
El Dorado 68, Troy 63--Ryan Carlos scored 34 points, including all 15 of his team’s points in the first quarter. Jerry Inzuna had 20 points for Troy.
Irvine 58, Aliso Niguel 43--Tim Rapp had 18 points for Irvine (5-1), which used a 16-4 third quarter run to pull away from Aliso Niguel (2-3).
La Habra 48, Valencia 45--Nathan Allard scored with 25 seconds left to secure the victory for La Habra (2-2). He finished with 13 points. Valencia is 1-3.
University 73, Woodbridge 59--Andy Lawrence scored 19 and Larry Brown 15 to lead host University (4-1). Woodbridge is 2-3.
In the Estancia girls’ basketball tournament:
Dana Hills 44, Yermo Silver Valley 19--Nicole Howard scored 19 points for Dana Hills (3-1), which advanced to Friday’s semifinals.
Estancia 35, Savanna 32--With 25 seconds left and the score tied, 30-30, Lisa Hirata made two free throws to lift Estancia (4-1).
Pacifica 70, Fullerton 36--Diana Barreras scored 23 points and Dominique Valencia had 21 points and six steals for Pacifica (2-0) in the pool-play game.
In the Lady Baron tournament:
Canyon 66, Calvary Chapel 49--Paulette Seaman scored 18 points and Meghan O’Neal had 17 for Canyon (1-3) in the upset victory. Cathy Joens scored 18 points for Calvary Chapel (1-1).
In the Santa Ana Valley tournament:
Santa Ana Valley 50, Kennedy 13--Raven Hebert had 16 points and Carina Martinez had 10 to lead Santa Ana Valley (4-3) in the pool-play game.
Long Beach Wilson 54, Capistrano Valley 23--Capistrano Valley (0-4) was outscored, 23-0, in the fourth quarter. Long Beach Wilson is 2-2.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Saddleback 41, Rancho Alamitos 25--Katrice Pickering had nine points and eight rebounds to lead host Rancho Alamitos (1-5).
Woodbridge 49, University 37--Amber Avestruz scored 18 points and Bryn Riley had 17 points and eight rebounds for Woodbridge (2-3). Fala Suiaunoa had 19 points and eight steals for University (1-2).
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Whittier Christian 4, Bellflower 1--Megan Brennan scored three goals for Whittier Christian (2-0-1)
In nonleague girls’ water polo:
Santa Ana 16, Whittier Pioneer 6--Danielle Heiland scored eight goals for visiting Santa Ana (1-1).
