First came rock climbing--the sport, not crossing the High Sierra the short way. Then came wall climbing--the sport, not what happens after six hours at a 5-year-old’s birthday party.

And now there’s the Rock--the sport, not Gibraltar.

Ascent Products of Montana has come up with what it calls the first “motorized, rotating, two-person climbing wall,” a nearly 12-foot-tall machine that simulates rock climbing in the great outdoors. Without the weather and the wildlife, of course.

The machine, which can be programmed to simulate such real climbs as El Capitan in Yosemite, looks like a large treadmill with handles and spikes. At $12,900, it’s cheaper than buying a real mountain. But not by much.
