Loser in City Council Race Files Request for Recount

A candidate who lost a race for a City Council seat by two votes has filed a legal challenge for a recount, city officials said.

Tom King, a Los Angeles Police Department detective who lost to Councilman Larry Waldie last November, has filed the suit seeking a judge’s order for a recount.

A request for a recount initially was made by Nadine Brown, publisher of the Walnut Times and a Diamond Bar resident. However, on the day of the recount, county officials called off the effort, saying only registered voters living in the district in question can make such a request.

King then filed suit, arguing that county rules are superseded by a California law stating that any voter can challenge an election result.
