Children’s Havens From Violence, Crime Established
All 18 of the city’s residential fire stations will double as havens for children who want to get away from violence or criminal behavior.
Firefighters would assist youngsters who felt they were in danger and alert police, officials said.
The decision was approved by the City Council last week and backed by the Long Beach Fire Department.
Councilman Del Roosevelt proposed the idea, saying that the stations were ideal as havens because they are open 24 hours a day. The program is expected to open in about two months.
