Orange Coast’s Garcia Wins in Three Sets

Orange Coast’s Martha Garcia defeated Tanya Hofmann-Weseleh of Glendale, Ariz., 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the first round of the Southwestern women’s tennis tournament at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.

Garcia plays top-seeded Katarina Malec from College of the Desert in the second round today. Malec, the defending state champion, had a first-round bye.

Camella Jaeger and Denise Poirel also advanced for the Pirates.

Wendy Balbuena of Cerritos defeated Orange Coast’s Lisa Cahn, 6-0, 6-2.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Golden West 7, Orange Coast 2--Jamie Christensen was two for four with two RBIs for Golden West. Amy McManus (3-1) pitched six innings for the Rustlers (6-2, 2-0). Sonia Correa (3-2) pitched a complete game for Orange Coast (3-2).

Saddleback 6, Irvine Valley 1--Tara Kroener pitched a complete game and struck out four for Saddleback. Kroener was three for four with two RBIs. The Gauchos are 5-2, 1-1.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Saddleback 160, Santa Ana 52--Jason Ely won the one-meter (172.05) and three-meter (178.95) diving events for Saddleback. Teammate Zsolt Vagi won the 200 freestyle (2:03.04) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.11) for the Gauchos.

In South Coast Conference men’s swimming:

Golden West 79, Mt. San Antonio 13; Golden West 86, East Los Angeles 7--Audy Octavian won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.38 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.73 for host Golden West (2-0).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Saddleback 223, Santa Ana 36--Jennifer George was a double-winner for Saddleback, winning the 200 free (2:10.28) and 500 free (5:36.35).

In South Coast Conference women’s swimming:

Golden West 75, Mt. San Antonio 45; Golden West 87, East Los Angeles 29--Rita Mariani won three individual events for host Golden West (2-0), including the 100 yard individual medley in 1:03.37.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, San Diego Mesa 0--Todd Clevenger had 16 kills for host Golden West (4-0), which won 15-5, 15-5, 15-8.

Orange Coast 3, Palomar 0--Steve Jobes, Nicholas Dominik and Ivan Mercer each had eight kills for Orange Coast (7-1, 3-1) in a 15-4, 15-12, 15-11 victory.
