Beschen Advances in Surf Tour Event

San Clemente’s Shane Beschen, who is ranked ninth in the world, had the second-best overall score Friday to advance to the third round of the men’s main round of the Clarion-Billabong Surf Tour at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz.

Beschen, who made his first appearance of the contest Friday, had an overall score of 21.00. He also had the day’s third-best individual score (8.33). Other Orange County surfers to advance were Ryan Simmons of Huntington Beach and Shea Lopez of San Clemente. Josh Loya of Santa Cruz had the top overall score (23.00).

Surf has been solid all week with waves six to eight feet high. Forecasters are calling for much the same through Sunday’s finals.
