Canyons Warms Up Against Hancock, 79-66
The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team tuned up for another shot at Ventura by building a 19-point first-half lead and coasting to a 79-66 victory over Hancock in a Western State Conference interdivision game Tuesday at Canyons.
The Cougars (13-5), who were beaten by Ventura for the state championship last season, will meet the two-time defending state champion Pirates on Saturday at Canyons at 5:30 p.m.
Maxine Unverferth had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Narineh Hartoonian had a season-high 16 assists for Canyons.

Ventura 106, Santa Monica 65--Amirah Leonard had 32 points, April Kozar 18 and Lynda Amari 17 for the Pirates (20-1) in a WSC interdivision game at Santa Monica.
Valley 68, Moorpark 57--Melolini Malaki scored 18 points and Maricela Rodriguez had 11 points, 16 rebounds and six steals for host Valley (11-8) in the WSC interdivision game.
Judy Tuimoloau scored 19 points for Moorpark (11-7).
Pierce 65, Oxnard 51--Carlyn Couch had 17 points and 11 rebounds for host Pierce (4-12) in a WSC interdivision game.
Claudia Johnson had 19 points for the Condors (0-9).
Cal Lutheran 84, Whittier 37--Missy Rider had 14 points for Cal Lutheran (5-6) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Cal Lutheran.
Montana State Northern 79, The Master’s 60--Elizabeth Hansell had 15 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals for host Master’s (5-11) in a nonconference game.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Valley 102, Oxnard 69--Jermaine Chase scored 25 points for the visiting Monarchs (15-5) in a WSC interdivision game at Oxnard.
Moorpark 92, Glendale 75--Ceneka Shaw had 23 points for host Moorpark (8-8) in a WSC interdivision game.
Tony Hoggats paced the Vaqueros (10-8) with 20 points.
