SCC Uses Defense to Ground Down Azusa Pacific
Southern California College played stingy defense and defeated Azusa Pacific, the 25th-ranked team in the NAIA, 61-47, in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday at SCC.
Elaine Whittemore had 21 points and 10 rebounds for SCC (14-4, 1-0 in conference), which limited Azusa Pacific (10-6, 0-1) to 29% shooting from the field in the first half as the Vanguards took a 38-21 lead.
Amee Pina had 13 points and five assists and Kristi Wright had 12 points and seven rebounds for SCC, which played without Coach Russ Davis, who was home sick with stomach flu.
Pilar Surch, a senior guard from Pacifica High, had 17 points and five three-pointers for Azusa Pacific, which committed 25 turnovers.
