Students Tour Urban Sites as Part of Sociology Class
A Whittier College class is taking a firsthand look at part of Los Angeles’ urban fabric--an experience they might not have were it not for a sociology course called “Workshop in Urban Studies.”
Relying mostly on public transportation, the students have visited Manual Arts High School on South Vermont Avenue, parts of Koreatown, the MacArthur Park area, Chinatown and parts of East Los Angeles.
Teacher Les Howard said one of the course highlights was an early morning breakfast at Clifton’s Cafeteria, followed by team assignments that began in the skid row area and ended on the Westside.
“We are trying to look at some of the complexities of class and ethnicity in the city and the way they interact,” Howard said.
Next week, the class will spend three days exploring Tijuana.
