* Re Robert Young (“TV Doctor and Father Who Knew Best, Dies,” July 23:

For those of us who grew up with Jim Anderson and Marcus Welby MD as strong male role models for husband, father and professional, Robert Young held a special place in our hearts.

In his ability to convey the expertise and confidence these fictitious characters required in their television personalities, while suffering from depression and its symptoms, Young offered tremendous encouragement to everyone who struggles with this painful disease. He was one of the first public figures to come forward and speak openly of how even a successful actor, with a history of career and financial recognition, could still suffer the sense of guilt, failure and fear that comes with depression.

But, most important, he demonstrated how to live a fulfilled and dignified life even with this illness.
