Theater Chain to Build 21-Screen Movie Complex
Edwards Cinemas has agreed to bring to South Gate what is being touted as the largest movie theater in southeast Los Angeles County, city officials announced.
The company has agreed to operate a 21-screen movie theater with more than 4,500 seats, covering 98,000 square feet, said Ruben Lopez, director of South Gate’s community development.
City officials hope the theater will attract other businesses to the proposed $40-million extension to the “Towne Center” shopping and entertainment complex at Firestone Boulevard and Garfield Avenue, Lopez said.
Construction of the extension is scheduled to begin next month and finish in late 1999. The movie theater is set to open in June 1999.
