Top-Seeded Teams Gearing Up for the Finals

The Westchester, Compton Dominguez and Verbum Dei boys and the Harbor City Narbonne, Brea Olinda, Mission Hills Alemany and Play del Rey St. Bernard girls were designated as the top-seeded teams in their divisions for the Southern California regional of the state basketball tournament.

First-round games in the eight-team regionals will be played Tuesday. Quarterfinals are Thursday and the regional finals will be played Saturday at Pauley Pavilion and the Pyramid. Winners advance to the state finals March 20-21 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento to play Northern California champions.

Compton Dominguez’s boys’ team, winner of four consecutive Southern Section Division II-A titles, is seeking its third consecutive Division II state title. The Dons open against San Diego Point Loma.

City Section 4-A champion Westchester is the top-seeded team in Division I. The Comets play Southern Section Division I-AA runner-up Long Beach Poly in a first-round game.
