Cost of Parking Near Pier Could Rise to $7 in Summer

A proposal to increase summer beach parking by $1 along a mile-long stretch of beach just off Pier Plaza is being considered to pay for a $4-million improvement project in that area.

Community Services Director Ron Hagan said the increase is among several fund-raising options his department will present to the City Council next month. Planned improvements along the beach, from 1st Street to Beach Boulevard, include new bathrooms, parking lots, lights and repaved biking paths. Parking now costs $6.

“This area is visited by some 7 million people a year and the facilities have not been repaired for over 35 years,” Hagan said.

The $1 increase in the area, where about 300,000 cars park a year, could cover annual obligations on a $3-million bond for the project, officials said.

Other options to be presented to the council include forming a beach improvement district with other nearby cities.
