Birmingham Runs Streak to 79 Behind Nettles and Patterson

Junior Orlando Nettles won the 100 meters in 10.6 seconds and senior Demetrus Patterson took the 200 in 21.8 to highlight Birmingham High’s 108 1/2-15 1/2 victory over San Fernando in a Northwest Valley Conference track and field opener Friday at Birmingham.

Nettles and Patterson ran on the Braves’ 400 relay team that won in 42.4.

Birmingham has won 79 consecutive dual meets.

In another boys’ track meet:

Taft 96, Kennedy 26--Larry Jones won the 440-yard dash in 49.8 seconds and ran a leg on Taft’s 440-yard relay team that won in 43.4 in the Northwest Valley Conference opener at Taft.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Taft 93, Kennedy 30--Frances Santin of Taft won the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.2, the 330-yard lows in 45.5 and the high jump at five feet in the Northwest Valley Conference opener at Taft.

Grant 97, Canoga Park 28--Freshman Alexis Witherspoon won the 100 in 12.5, the long jump at 17-1 1/2 and ran on Grant’s winning 400 relay team that clocked 51.2 in the Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Grant.

BASEBALL

Oxnard 10, Santa Clara 2--Paul McAnulty had a grand slam, a double and five runs batted in, and the Yellowjackets (2-1) scored seven runs in the second inning at Santa Clara.

Eric Swanger (1-0) allowed two hits over four innings, and Omari Parker and Eric Fong each hit home runs for Oxnard.

Taft 10, Santa Monica 2--Jeff Spector had three hits, scored a run and drove in one for the Toreadors (3-2) in a Westside tournament victory at Santa Monica.

Montclair Prep 11, Kilpatrick 1--Noah Rosenblum had a double, triple, three RBIs and scored three runs for the Mounties (1-2) in at the Mission Hills Little League complex.

Lancaster 11, Bishop 2--Eric Sundberg had two hits and five RBIs, and Frankie Rosado had two hits and three RBIs to help the Lobos win at Lancaster.

SOFTBALL

Agoura 4-9, Chatsworth 0-0--Jennifer Grennan (3-0) pitched a two-hitter and Lauren Casper had two hits for the Chargers (4-1) in the first game, and Amanda Oleson (1-1) pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts in the second game at Agoura.

El Camino Real 2, Calabasas 0--Stephanie Frasco pitched a five-hitter and the Conquistadores scored two unearned runs at Calabasas.

Amy Rosson (1-2) allowed just three hits and struck out eight, but she walked six, hit a batter and Calabasas (2-2) committed four errors.

Burroughs 2, Glendale 1--Malia Sullivan’s one-out infield single drove in the game-winning run for the Indians (3-1) in the bottom of the sixth at Olive Park.

Buckley 11, Marymount 10--Nikki Brown was five for five with two RBIs and drove in the game-winning run with a one-out triple in the seventh at Buckley (1-0).

L.A. Baptist 6, Ontario Christian 0--Nikki Girard pitched a two-hitter for L.A. Baptist (1-1) in a time-shortened five-inning game in the Western tournament at Western Christian.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Royal 12, Newbury Park 6--Anders Oding, who is 12-0 this season, and Randy Wong, who is 10-2, swept their singles matches and the Highlanders won a Marmonte League opener at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Calabasas 13, Crossroads 5--No. 1 singles player Braden Atergood and the No. 1 doubles team of Jon Yee and Brad Gold each swept three sets for the Coyotes (5-1) at Lincoln Park in Los Angeles.
