Recognition for 2 Educators

* The March 3 column by Jerry Hicks concerning Beth Cosner and Giles Brown brought back many pleasant memories of over 40 years ago. At the time I was a 20-year-old student attending Orange Coast College.

Dr. Giles was my American history instructor and was one of those dedicated teachers who motivated his students to aspire to be knowledgeable and involved citizens. Thanks to his encouragement and the exposure he gave me to our great American heritage, I became involved in my community, eventually serving as mayor for six years. I’m sure hundreds of others who sat at his feet became participating citizens due to his inspiration.

Many years later, when I served as the chairman of the World Affairs Council of Orange County, there was Giles sitting at the head table with me serving as moderator of the question-and-answer session. His beloved Beth was seated beside him.

It’s hard to imagine those two mutually loving individuals having an argument over a library book. On the other hand they both were sticklers for doing things correctly.

Thanks for reminding me of these two wonderful educators. It was nice to see them recognized.
