HIGH SCHOOL GOLF ROUNDUP

City 5 League tournament--There’s a new star emerging in City Section golf, and his name is Keith Romar.

The junior from Birmingham High shot a two-over-par 74 to beat defending City champion Burley Stamps of Palisades by two strokes in the league championship match at Buenaventura Golf Course.

Chatsworth (411) won a tight team race over Palisades (412) and Granada Hills (414).

Last week, Romar tied a school record with a five-under-par 66 at Knollwood Country Club. He has been playing golf for only three years. Last year, he tied for fourth at the City final and he has grown three inches to 6 feet 1 since then.

“I think he’s a very legitimate choice to win City,” said Grant Coach Howard Levine.

“It looks like I’m going to have to tune up my game,” Stamps said.

Stamps, who hits 280-yard drives, took a triple bogey on the par-4 10th hole after hitting his tee shot out of bounds.

“It was my only bad hole,” he said.

Romar had bogeys on Nos. 8, 9 and 11. He made a 17-foot birdie putt on No. 5, a 378-yard par-four. Six times his putts lipped the cup.

“I felt I was putting real good, but they didn’t drop for me,” Romar said.

Romar has come on strong since shooting an 89 last March at Harding Golf Course. That’s when he told his father, “You either got to help me with my mental game or I’m going to quit golf.”

His father, Les, took him out and gave him some pointers. Romar has been at the top of his game ever since.

“I think my game is really improving right now,” he said.

Romar is peaking in time for the City championships May 18-19 at Wilson and Harding golf courses.
