Slain Peace Officers Will Be Honored

On Friday, Simi Valley police officers will be joining other law enforcement authorities from across the country in recognition of Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

A chaplain will offer prayers at the beginning of each shift and officers will wear black bands around their badges in remembrance of those officers who have given their lives in service to their communities.

In addition, all flags in Simi Valley will fly at half-mast.

This year’s event will take on a personal meaning for many Simi Valley police officers as they remember the death of Officer Michael Clark, who was killed in August 1995 while responding to a call.

He was the first officer in Simi Valley killed in the line of duty.

According to statistics compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, of 159 police officers killed in the line of duty in 1997, 16 were from California.
