Council to Replace Pier Light Fixtures Corroded by Marine Air
The lighting fixtures that were installed on the pier during its renovation seven years ago have become cracked and corroded because of the marine air, leading city officials to draw up a plan to replace them.
The plastic-like polymer material used for the 36 custom-made lamps started cracking about a year ago and salt air has seeped in, corroding the poles.
Neil Miller, public works director, said the city will replace the poles with a lightweight concrete that will be more likely to withstand the moist marine environment.
“We’re disappointed that they didn’t last, but the rest of the work on the pier seems to be holding up fine,” Miller said.
“Any time you build a structure in a marine environment, the upkeep is more difficult.”
Miller said the city plans to spend $120,000 from the general fund to replace the fixtures.
He said the repairs will probably be made after the new fiscal year begins July 1.
