What: “Greatest World Series Moments” video

Price: $19.95

Thirty years of World Series memories in a one-hour, tightly edited tape filled with vignettes? You couldn’t ask for much more, and that’s what you get with this tape. This video and its companion, “This Week in Baseball: 20 Years of Unforgettable Finishes,” are the latest in a series produced by Major League Baseball Productions and distributed by PolyGram Video. Both are hosted by Ozzie Smith and will be on sale later this month.

“Greatest World Series Moments” begins with the 1969 Series and the Miracle Mets’ stunning victory over the Baltimore Orioles, then continues through last year’s Series.

One of the more memorable moments is a recap of the controversy in Game 5 of the ’78 Series between the Dodgers and New York Yankees, when the Yankees’ Reggie Jackson turned the other cheek, so to speak.

The Dodgers’ Tommy John was on the mound, trying to hold a 3-0 lead with Thurman Munson on second and Jackson on first. Lou Piniella hit a hot liner to shortstop Bill Russell, who couldn’t quite handle it. Jackson started for second, then retreated toward first. When Russell finally threw the ball, Jackson, right in front of first baseman Steve Garvey, stuck out his hip, knocking the ball down the right-field line. Jackson was ruled out at second but Piniella was safe at first and Munson scored.

Manager Tom Lasorda came flying out of the dugout, arguing that Piniella should have been out because Jackson had interfered.

“He’s got to get out of the way,” screamed Lasorda, who had a wad of tobacco in his cheek.

“Don’t spit at me,” the umpire told Lasorda--several times.

That’s only a sample, but about every significant Series moment you can think of since 1969 is on this outstanding tape.
