Twin Remains Hospitalized After Jail Suicide Attempt

Jeen “Gina” Han remained hospitalized under guard Wednesday after attempting suicide earlier in the week, and a sheriff’s spokesman said she may have tried to kill herself by swallowing over-the-counter pain pills.

Sheriff’s Lt. Hector Rivera said Han told investigators and doctors that she had taken “several” Tylenol pills that made her ill and vomit. However, Rivera said that jail officials are still investigating the incident and have not confirmed whether Han took Tylenol or sleeping pills.

Han, 24, was sentenced last week to 26 years to life in prison for conspiring with two teenagers to kill her identical twin, Sunny Han. Rivera said that “we know she was depressed” and that “she indicated she wanted to take her life.”

Rivera said that inmates can obtain Tylenol and other medication from the jail’s medical staff. But he said all medicines are given in limited quantities.

“If it was Tylenol, she’s in a module with 16 other inmates who can pass along medication to her,” Rivera said “That’s one way that she could’ve obtained the Tylenol.”

Jail officials do not believe the pills were brought in by an outsider, he said.

“She will be more closely monitored when she’s returned to jail, and we’ll take the necessary steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Rivera said.
