Strawberries and Flavor

Why would anyone want to go to the Strawberry Festival in Oxnard?

Ninety percent of the fields are planted with the new “better” strawberries. These huge red berries look good but have no taste and would crack the concrete if you dropped one. The are great for shipping but not for eating.

I grew up in San Luis Obispo and have picked berries in a pick-your-own field from the time I was little. Now I won’t even buy them because I can’t find a field that grows the old kind that have taste.

Your Sunday magazine had a great article on strawberries but unless the writer is new to California or has a secret stash of the old type of berry, he does not know what he is talking about.

Oh, where has taste gone and where can I get some of the old type of strawberry?
