MetroStars Help Draw 56,404

While a crowd of 32,908, including 13,000 walk-up fans, showed up at Shea Stadium to see Mike Piazza’s first game as a New York Met, soccer drew 56,404 to Giant Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Saturday.

The New York-New Jersey MetroStars (5-5) recorded a 4-2 victory over the Miami Fusion (5-6) in a Major League Soccer game that followed an exhibition between two World Cup teams, Scotland and Columbia. That game ended in a 2-2 tie.

The crowd was the fifth largest in MLS history.

San Jose 1, Kansas City 0--Andy Kirk made six saves for his second consecutive shutout and Ronald Cerritos’ first-minute goal stood up as the Clash (5-6) defeated the Wizards (4-7) before 10,333 at San Jose.

D.C. 3, Tampa Bay 2--Roy Lassiter and Tony Sanneh scored second-half goals to give the United (10-3) a comeback victory over the Mutiny (2-10) before 16,991 at Washington.

Chicago 5, Colorado 0--Ante Razov, Jerzy Podronzny and Roman Kosecki scored three goals in a six-minute span as the Fire (5-5) routed the Rapids (3-8) before 23,789 at Chicago.
