28 Die in Crashes as Smoke Clouds Road

Twenty-eight people died in road accidents, including 16 in a single crash just south of Johannesburg, after smoke from a grass fire clouded the freeway. In that pileup, a truck plowed into traffic halted by an earlier collision and burst into flames. Five of the victims were trapped in their vehicles and burned to death. Grass fires near South African freeways are common during the dry winter months.
