Presidents of private colleges and universities commanded handsome salaries in 1996-97. Yet none of them knocked USC football coach John Robinson from his perch as the best-paid man in academia. His salary was $527,000 1/3at least it was until he was fired at the end of 1997.Nor have many of California 3/8s college presidents earned as much as their counterparts at Eastern schools, according to a nationwide survey of federal tax returns by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Here are the salaries of the nation 3/8s best-paid private college presidents and of some Southern California college leaders.
