Two juveniles were in custody Sunday after one tried to stab a police officer who chased the youths down in a stolen car they were taking for a Halloween joy ride, authorities said.

Oxnard police officers said they spotted the boys, 13 and 15, in a speeding car at 10:45 p.m. Saturday.

A brief chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a parked car. The boys climbed out of the driver’s side window and fled on foot, police said.

As officers closed in, the 15-year-old passenger attempted to stab one of the police officers with a screwdriver, according to a police report. The teen was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

The car’s 13-year-old driver was arrested shortly thereafter. Both youths were booked on suspicion of auto theft and remain in custody in juvenile hall.

The older youth, who sustained minor injuries during the incident, is also expected to be charged with assault on a police officer.
