Long Beach Man Kills Son, Shoots Self, Police Say
A Long Beach man drove to a park Sunday morning with his 19-year-old son, removed a rifle from the trunk and allegedly shot the younger man in the head before turning the gun on himself, Long Beach police said.
Blaine Estell Mansfield, 56, remained in extremely critical condition Sunday afternoon, while his son, also named Blaine, died of his wounds, Officer Maria Lopez said.
Police said a suicide note was left by the bodies but would not comment on a possible motive.
The two pulled up near a playground at Recreation Park at Park Avenue and 7th Street around 9:30 a.m., she said.
“They laid down a blanket,” Lopez said. “The father returned to his car and came back with a rifle. As both of them laid on the blanket, he shot his son in the head and turned it on himself.”
Police said the older Mansfield is a local investor, who lives in the exclusive College Park Estates and is well-known in Long Beach social circles.
