Unitarians Seek Consensus

Unitarians in Laguna Beach will contemplate the meaning of covenants during a service tomorrow as part of a movement that began more than a year ago across the continent.

Unitarians in Canada and the United States agreed to start a five-year process in 1997 to discuss what types of commitments Unitarians were willing to make to each other, to other congregations and to the world.

The process, called “Fulfilling the Promise,” began with a national survey of church members.

Rev. Chris Schriner will speak on “Commitments, Covenants and Personal Freedoms” on Sunday at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach at 429 Cypress Drive in Laguna Beach beginning at 10:30 a.m.

A covenant “means a working consensus of understanding,” Schriner said. “The ultimate goal in five years is to reach a new statement of consensus that will express the covenantal bonds that connect us.”
