St. Margaret’s Falls Short Against Flintridge

La Canada Flintridge Prep scored three consecutive third-quarter touchdowns and held off a St. Margaret’s comeback to win, 38-28, in a Division XIII playoff game Friday at Capistrano Valley High.

Ross Fippinger contributed three of the five touchdowns and Rhett Swanson completed 19 of 35 passes for 220 yards with two interceptions for the visiting Rebels (7-3).

Flintridge Prep scored on its first play when J.P. Blecksmith hit a wide open Peter Twist for a 65-yard touchdown reception.

Later in the first quarter, Fippinger scored on a 16-yard run up the middle to give the Rebels a 14-0 lead.

The Tartans (5-4) cut the deficit to 14-7 when Swanson scored on a two-yard keeper.

Fippinger scored twice in the third quarter. He scored on a 20-yard run and a 20-yard interception return.

Late in the quarter, St. Margaret’s Jimmy Freeman returned a kickoff for 80 yards and cut Flintridge Prep’s lead to 35-13. Alex Perin’s point-after attempt was wide right.

The Tartans recovered the on-side kick and scored a several plays later on a 26-yard pass from Swanson to junior Darren Kelly.

St. Margaret’s recovered another on-side kick and later scored on Swanson’s six-yard pass to Alex Perin with 6:51 left in the game. Swanson hooked up with Perin for the two-point conversion to make it 35-28.

Flintridge Prep’s Randy Chandler made a 35-yard field goal with 2:31 left.
