Music Education

We could not agree more with your Nov. 10 editorial “Keep Music in Mind.”

The American Assn. of University Women, Orange Branch, has for the past 22 years supported music education in Orange, Tustin and Santa Ana public schools by providing musical instruments at nominal rental cost to children who would otherwise be unable to participate in school music programs.

The need is great, as are the rewards for providing an opportunity for eager young students. The decline in California school-based music and band programs has been a source of concern.

We hope California will follow your suggestion and study the successes of music education, and we urge parents to know what their school districts are doing for students’ musical education.

My husband and I encountered a hopeful sign while leaving a wonderful choral concert at the music center. A group of young people were walking across the bridge, ahead of us. They had obviously enjoyed the program from the way they were singing and humming some of the melodies. Then, suddenly, they began to sing a Christmas carol, in harmony. What a treat.
