Santa Ana Men Advance at Citrus Tournament

Former El Toro High standout Mark Wulfemeyer had a game-high 20 points to help Santa Ana to a 75-62 first-round victory over Pasadena in the Citrus men’s basketball tournament Wednesday at Citrus College.

Wulfemeyer made six three-pointers. Santa Ana improved to 3-1.

Pasadena led at the half, 33-30, but Santa Ana scored 45 points in the second half.

Chris Mattice had 12 points for Santa Ana, which plays Occidental in a second-round game at 6 p.m. Friday at Citrus College.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Cerritos 68, Cypress 54--Cypress played catch-up all night as Marco McCain gave Cerritos its primary offense with 14 points, including three three-pointers, and four assists. Brad Smith had 17 points, including three three-pointers, to lead Cypress (3-4).

El Camino 69, Orange Coast 66--Orange Coast’s late second-half surge wasn’t enough to avert a loss. Anthony Cooper had 15 points to lead OCC (2-2).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

College of the Desert 94, Golden West 77--Golden West trailed Desert by only 32-30 at the half, but a 62-point second half by Desert and five Golden West starters fouling out squashed any chance for the Rustlers. Kelly Medlem had 23 points and Amy Pace had 20 to lead Golden West (1-5). Kelly Wagner scored 25 points for Desert (1-1).

Cerritos 85, Cypress 66--Cerritos overpowered Cypress in the second half. Antares Vice had 18 points to lead Cypress (1-4) and teammate Angela Garrett had 13 and two assists. Jennifer Swanson scored 22 points for Cerritos (5-1).
