Rare Sumerian artifacts from the 4,500-year-old royal cemetery at Ur will go on view as “Treasures From the Royal Tombs of Ur” opens at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art. Older than the riches of King Tut, the Ur artifacts, discovered in the late 1920s by famed British archeologist C. Leonard Woolley, include jewelry, cups of gold and silver and objects of art and culture that convey the ancient Sumerian culture (2600-2500 BC) at its zenith.

Every Sunday afternoon in October, some of L.A.’s funny women will participate in “Heidi Joyce’s Stand Up Against Domestic Violence,” a weekly series of comedy events to benefit the Theatre of Hope for Abused Women’s Safe Harbor programs. This week’s show will feature Judy Gold, Rhonda Shear, Jackie Wollner and others.

Filmforum launches its fall series at LACE with a three-month retrospective of the work of experimental filmmaker James Benning. The first program is composed of “8 1/3 x 11,” Benning’s 1974 graduate thesis film at the University of Wisconsin, “The United States of America” (1975) and “O Panama” (1985). Benning will be present.
